Borussia Monchengladbach vs Chelsea Predictions
Chelsea have one final preseason outing ahead, as they prepare to face Borussia Monchengladbach in a friendly this weekend. The Blues have put together a fine run of form this summer, with Frank Lampard’s side starting to produce the goods. It’s certainly been a high scoring preseason campaign for the Blues, but can that continue when they make this trip to Germany? With their encounter with Manchester United just a week away, the Blues should look to settle upon their side for that trip to Old Trafford.
The hosts have built up some strong form as they look to better last season’s fifth-place finish. While there’s no Champions League football for Gladbach in 2019/20, their five wins in six so far have set them up for a strong season to come. However, there was little cause for alarm after losing 2-0 at home to Athletic last weekend. Now Gladbach face their toughest game of the summer, so can they step up to secure a win in their final preseason game?
The Blues certainly put on a show in midweek, as they claimed their third successive victory. The Blues won 5-3 at Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg. The Blues had Christian Pulisic and Pedro to thank for that victory, with the wingers making a big impact in the absence of Eden Hazard. We had thought that Lampard would inherit a side who struggled going forward, but so far the signs point to a fun and frustrating first season for the English boss. His team have been lethal going forward, with some issues in defence.
The Blues have scored 16 times in preseason, with recent matches showing clear defensive issues. They’ve kept only one clean sheet – which came at Irish Premier League side St Patrick’s. The Blues have shipped three goals in each of their last two wins – beating Reading 4-3 and Champions League-bound Red Bull Salzburg 5-3. Overall, five of the Blues last six friendly clashes have seen over 2.5 goals, while they meet a Gladbach side who are no strangers to goals themselves.
The hosts saw 65% of their home Bundesliga games last term finish with over 2.5 goals. They should be looking to punish a Chelsea defence which conceded twice at each of their rivals in the Premier League’s top five. Chelsea finished with 63% of their away league games seeing over 2.5 goals, while their friendlies have kicked things up a notch. Given the form behind them, we’re backing over 2.5 goals in Saturday’s game.
