Bielsa’s babes can follow in first-team footsteps

Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash between Fulham and Leeds seems more of a nuisance to the clubs than a stepping stone to landing some important silverware.

Fulham will make changes because they are in the midst of a gruelling Championship programme and need to regain some momentum in their promotion bid after losing at home to Reading on Saturday.

New signing Rodrigo Muniz picked up a heavy knock after scoring on his debut against the Royals while right-back Kenny Tete is out and midfielders Tom Cairney and Fabio Carvalho are still absent through injury.

Leeds are still looking for their first Premier League victory of the season and can’t afford to take any risks with an already thinly-stretched squad.

Yet the game could be quite an entertaining affair with Leeds set to field a number of their talented under-23 squad that have been racking up the goals in Premier League 2 fixtures.

That team, led by the likes of Dutch winger Crysensio Summerville, have scored 14 and conceded nine in five matches and play in much the same way as their senior colleagues.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side leave spaces at the back anyway as they maraud forward at every opportunity, but their defence has been woefully exposed for what it is this season – not good enough.

They are highly likely to score and concede at Craven Cottage this week and, with Fulham to make changes too, we are happy to take the odds-on price for both teams to score.

In terms of the correct score betting, a 2-2 result would not be a great surprise given Leeds are averaging almost 1.7 per away game since returning to the Premier League and Fulham have hit eight in their last four Championship matches.
