Tip Reasoning

  • Burnley are unbeaten in four games, scoring nine times
  • The Clarets have lost once in their last seven
  • Tottenham have scored only 11 goals in 12 league games
  • The visitors have failed to win four of six trips this term

Another blow for Tottenham

A 2-1 loss at Mura in the Europa Conference League on Thursday was arguably the low-point of the season for Tottenham. They may have sacked Nuno Espirito Santo, but Antonio Conte’s side lost at the lowest-ranked side in the competition and they could crash out of Europe’s third-tier tournament at the group stage.

That came on the heels of a comeback win over Leeds last weekend. Tottenham struggled early on in that win and they had to grow into the game after an impressive start from Marcelo Bielsa’s side. Facing Burnley offers a completely different test for Conte, which could leave them vulnerable at Turf Moor.

Burnley on the up

Burnley may still be in the relegation zone, but they’ve put together a solid run of late. The Clarets have closed the gap on the sides above hem after going back to basics and making themselves hard to beat.

Burnley are unbeaten in four Premier League games and their only loss across the last seven in the league came at Man City. The Clarets have scored nine times across their last four in the league, which should worry a Tottenham side who have scored only 11 goals in 12 matches this term.

Clarets can hold firm

Burnley’s impressive run should see them hold Spurs at bay this weekend. Conte’s side have been poor on the road, picking up two wins from their six trips and scoring only five times. They won at Wolves and Newcastle, but defeats at West Ham, Arsenal and Crystal Palace are cause for concern.

Conte’s side drew a blank at Everton in his first trip and they had to graft to overcome a Leeds’ side who are among the worst defences in the division. Given what we know about the Clarets from over the years they’re capable of holding Spurs at bay, while the hosts’ scoring run suggests they’ll make this tough for Tottenham.

Burnley to avoid defeat here is my first prediction, while I’m backing a 1-1 correct score. The hosts have seen three of their last four finish in score draws and they’ve drawn half of their league matches this term.

Burnley predicted lineup: Pope; Lowton, Collins, Mee, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Brownhill, Cork, McNeil; Wood, Cornet

Tottenham predicted lineup: Lloris; Sanchez, Dier, Davies; Royal, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Reguilon; Moura, Kane, Heung-min
