First team to score likely to win at Valley

It’s ten games since Charlton came from behind to take any points at home in League One so the Addicks’ know the importance of making a good start.

And the first goal could be crucial this Saturday when a Portsmouth side without a goal in their last three away trips take on Nigel Adkins’ men.

Adkins admits his side are not gelling at the moment after seeing Charlton concede a second-half own-goal in a 1-1 draw with Gillingham that drops them to 21st place in the table.

Chances were missed again on Tuesday, leaving this Addicks side that averaged a healthy 1.5 goals per game last season with only seven to show from their first eight matches.

Portsmouth picked up a point from a 2-2 home draw with in-form Plymouth in midweek, but they have had major problems finding the back of the net on the road.

Danny Cowley opened Tuesday’s game up by switching to a 3-4-3, which he may need to implement from the start on Saturday to arrest a run of three away games without a goal.

That said, his three attackers have combined for a total of three goals in their eight games together this season, so the problem isn’t going to go away with one tactical tweak and we fully expect this match to be decided by one solitary strike.

Charlton have the marginally better form and maybe the better squad too, so we are going to edge towards the hosts taking the points in a scrappy 1-0 win on Saturday.

The best bet here must be to take the both teams to score – no option because only three of the last nine Charlton home league games and three of nine Pompey away-days have both teams been able to register.
