Making Gresty Road a feared place to visit

Okay, we admit it, at the start of the season we did not see Crewe Alexandra as one of the sides who would still be in the running for the League 2 title at this stage of the campaign, but we’ll bet that neither did you. That’s not to say we didn’t think that Crewe would be any good this season, but like the majority we expected them to end somewhere around mid-table rather than mixing it with the biggest clubs in the division.

Every few seasons their strategy of blooding young talent from their youth teams with experienced professionals bears fruits, and on the evidence of what we have seen so far, that is exactly what is currently happening. The Alex are in excellent form at the moment and with 55 goals scored so far this season, they also lead the way for goals scored in League 2.

The visitors are on a charge

While everything may be positive at Gresty Road at the moment, there is danger on the horizon as this weekend’s visitors are an Oldham side who have plenty to cheer about themselves at the moment. The Latics are currently undefeated in their last six league matches, a run of form which has come an opportune moment as it has put some much needed daylight between themselves and the danger zone.

However, there is still plenty to work on for a visiting side who have typically not had it all their own way on the road so far this season. Oldham have averaged just a point per game on their travels this term and they come into this match having had to settle for a share of the spoils in each of their last four away matches.

The hosts look too strong

While Oldham may be enjoying their best run for a while, that lack of form on the road is still a great cause for concern. Given that they are against the second most in-form side in the division, the top scorers in the league and a side who are excellent on their own patch, it seems obvious that the way to go in this one is with an Oldham win.

In terms of a correct score, while we do expect a home win, we don;t think that they will have it all their own way. The hosts have scored 16 times in their last eight league matches, but 10 times in their last 4 home matches so they will clearly be expecting another goal fest this weekend. However, Oldham have eight goals in their last four, so are clearly capable of causing a problem. All in all, a 3-1 home win looks to be the way to go.
