Germany vs Slovakia Predictions

Germany quite predictably ended up topping their Euro 2016 group, but it wasn’t without it’s difficulties and they certainly didn’t look their best. In fact, they haven’t been particularly impressive since the World Cup in Brazil ended. They only just topped their qualifying group ahead of Poland and the just edged them to the top spot in the group stages as well.

Their campaign started with a 2-0 win over the disappointing Ukraine when they were set on their way by stand in defender Mustafi, but their attacking play lacked a cutting edge with Mario Gotze in the false nine position. It took until the 92nd minute for Bastian Schweinsteiger to double their lead with what turned out to be a crucial goal.

Against Poland they continued to struggle to create openings, and even after the introduction of a more traditional striker in Mario Gomez they were poor. In all honesty they were lucky to claim a point from this match as Arkdadiusz Milik missed two golden opportunities for Poland. The final group game against Northern Ireland resulted in slightly improved attacking play from them, but they were still limited to a single goal by the sturdy Northern Ireland defence. This saw them claim the top spot in the group on goal difference ahead of Poland.

Slovakia began their group stages with a last gasp defeat to Wales as their defence switched off to allow Hal Robson-Kanu to score a late winner in a 2-1 defeat for them. They bounced back with an impressive display against Russia though, with Marek Hamsik proving his quality with a superb assist and an even better goal. They held on after Glushakov scored an 80th minute goal as well, which set them up nicely for a final game against England.

They defended with determination throughout the match and were content with sitting ten men behind the ball and stopping England from breaching their defence. It worked as the game ended goalless, and their method of holding on will certainly worry a Germany side who have struggled to break teams down so far in this competition.

Slovakia always pose a threat on the counter attack with the top notch quality of Marek Hamsik and the pace of Vladimir Weiss, and they will take heart from the fact that they managed to beat Germany 3-1 in one of the warm up friendlies for Euro 2016. If Jerome Boateng misses out I think Slovakia have a real chance of testing the Germany defence, and my prediction is that they’ll be playing a slightly more open style than they did against England.

This will obviously lead to more chances for the German team though, who have only failed to find the net in two of their last 19 matches. Slovakia have scored in eight of their last 11 matches though, and with one of these being a three goal haul against Germany in May they will feel good about their chances of finding the net.

The Germany defence has looked vulnerable so far and they have been lucky not to concede yet. My prediction is that the clean sheet run will end on Sunday, and odds of 7/4 for Both Teams to Score look too good to turn down. I’m backing Germany to get the win in the end though with a 2-1 correct score prediction at 8/1.
