Hull City vs Manchester United Predictions
- Manchester United conceded 50 goals in 38 Premier League games last season
- Both teams have scored in 13 of Manchester United’s last 17 away league matches
- Hull hit 11 goals in their final six home games of the Championship regular season
Both sides can score on Humberside
Hopes are high for Manchester United this season and the Red Devils are expected to beat Hull in their opening Premier League contest of the campaign.
The Old Trafford side have strengthened their midfield with the signings of Andrey Santos and
Youri Tielemans and United have a good forward line.
Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo look capable of causing defences huge problems in the Premier League this term and Hull are unlikely to be able to withstand the quality of United’s forward line.
However, there are some concerns for the Red Devils as they look to challenge the Premier League elite.
United conceded 50 goals in 38 top-flight matches last term and the backline isn’t convincing.
With Matthijs de Ligt set to miss the trip to Humberside through injury, Michael Carrick is set to field a defensive line of Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire against Hull.
That backline looks far from watertight and there is a major lack of pace in centre-back positions.
On top of the defensive concerns, Carrick has plenty to prove in the dugout.
The former England midfielder guided United to a third-place finish last term, but there was no pressure of expectation following Ruben Amorim’s disastrous spell in charge at Old Trafford and United were fresh with no deep runs in cup competitions or European football.
The pressure is now on Carrick and there is no guarantee that the former Middlesbrough boss will be up to the job.
Of course, Hull may not be capable of taking advantage of United’s defensive issues and the Tigers weren’t anywhere near one of the top performing clubs in the Championship last term.
However, the Humbersiders have added Nobel Mendy Konstantinos Tzolakis, Lucas Herrington and Jens Hjerto-Dahl to last season’s promoted squad.
More may well be needed to keep Hull in the Premier League and the Tigers are undoubtedly the weakest team in the division, but Sergej Jakirovic spent much of the previous campaign defying the odds and the Humbersiders are 8-1 to pull off another huge shock on Saturday.
Clearly, beating United at MKM Stadium is a huge ask, which is likely to prove beyond Hull, but finding the net against a suspect defence is a realistic aim.
It’s just shy of even money that both teams score on Humberside and that rates a solid play.
