Rangers and Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

Goals at both ends were a feature of Rangers league games at Ibrox late last term and there is no reason to suggest that will change after they conceded in recent ‘home’ games against Motherwell and Dynamo Kiev. The Light Blues have beaten St Johnstone in eight of their last nine meetings, so should still come out on top in this early-season cup clash.

Rangers 3-2

Reason for tip

St Johnstone have scored at least two goals in all three of their competitive away games this season. Their front two looked sharp at Kilmarnock last weekend and can expose a Rangers defence that lacks pace. After their ten men were made to toil in the second half by Dynamo Kiev, this game could open up quite quickly and produce a few goals with Rangers taken to edge it 3-2.

Cyriel Dessers To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Cyriel Dessers has scored in two of his four Rangers appearances this term and is starting to look like a capable goalscorer at this level now. His movement is improving and he can notch against a St Johnstone side that shipped two at Aberdeen in their league opener and were fortunate not to concede against Kilmarnock last weekend.

Rangers vs St Johnstone Predictions

  • Rangers have won four of their last five home league games with both teams scoring in each
  • St Johnstone have scored at least two goals in all three of their competitive away games this season
  • Rangers have beaten St Johnstone in eight of their last nine meetings

Rangers must beware slick Saints duo

Rangers will be desperate to get Tuesday’s Champions League defeat to Dynamo Kiev out of their system when they return to Hampden Park to entertain St Johnstone in the Scottish League Cup on Saturday.

The Light Blues were creating better chances than their opponents until Jefte’s harsh second yellow card saw them reduced to 10 men and the match swing in the Ukrainians’ favour.

But this cup clash may be almost as complicated for Phillipe Clement’s side if St Johnstone’s in-form strike duo of Adama Sidibeh and Benjamin Kimpioka cause as many problems as they have in the Perth club’s opening two league contests.

High-scoring contest at Hampden

Saints boss Craig Levein is well known for ‘parking the bus’ in away games like this, but they have a real threat on the counter-attack now that could bear fruit against Rangers.

Gers have won eight of their last nine meetings with Saints and kept clean sheets in each of those victories, but Clement’s backline lacks pace and is down on confidence after keeping only one clean sheet in four games so far this season.

High-scoring wins with goals at both ends were the trend at Ibrox late last season and, following a 2-1 win over Motherwell in their first home league game of the campaign, it looks worthwhile in backing the Light Blues to win this with both teams on the scoresheet again.
