Tip Reasoning

  • Despite a poor season overall in 2020/21, Valencia lost just four of their 19 starts at Mestalla, winning eight.
  • Getafe lost 11 of their 19 away trips last term, winning just three.
  • Valencia are unbeaten in their last four meetings with Getafe at Mestalla (W1, D3).

Bordalas to make winning start against former club

Two sides looking to put disappointing seasons behind them get the 2021/22 La Liga campaign underway at Mestalla this Friday, as new Valencia boss Pepe Bordalas takes charge of Los Che for the first time against previous club Getafe.

Bordalas’ switch from the Madrilenian outfit certainly adds some spice to this opening fixture and the 57 year-old faces the first of many tests to come as he looks to turn Valencia around.

Stricken by ongoing financial problems, Los Che limped to a 13th place finish last term after top four efforts and Copa Del Rey success in previous campaigns and they’re amongst the favourites to be relegated from the top flight this season.

Bordalas is charged with preventing such a demise and Los Che probably still hold enough quality in their ranks to keep safe. Despite their dismal 2020/21, they only lost four of their 19 starts at Mestalla, winning eight, and their form at home should be key once again this term.

And it’s their toughness at Mestalla which leads us to marginally favour Los Che this Friday. With a raucous crowd back behind them and a new manager bringing hope, we think Valencia can grind out a positive opening day result against a Getafe side that lost 11 of their 19 away trips last season, winning just three.

However, the hosts’ high number of draws here last season and Getafe’s lack of wins on the road means we’re taking some insurance by backing Valencia in the draw no bet market, which will ensure stakes are returned if things end all square.

Three of the last four meetings between the teams here have also finished level, though Los Che are taken to edge what should be a tight Matchday 1 fixture, and 1-0 is our correct score prediction.
