Watford Draw No Bet

Reason for tip

West Brom have struggled against teams deploying a back three system like Watford. The Baggies have failed to win their last six against such systems (3 draws, 3 losses) while winning their last five against teams with back fours.

Watford 1-0

Reason for tip

West Brom failed to score in four of their last five home Championship contests against teams starting with a back-three system. Watford were fortunate to get the winner against Sheffield United last week, but they created plenty and their front three will cause havoc in this division if they stay.

Don’t back Baggies when up against back-three systems

West Brom’s inability to cope with three-man defences could have cost them dearly at Middlesbrough last weekend and they should not be as short in the betting to beat Watford side likely set-up that way.

The Baggies eventually stormed back from a goal down after Steve Bruce made a tactical tweak to his system at the interval. But Albion could have been three goals down by that point and cannot afford to spend 45 minutes on the back foot at home to potentially more clinical opponents.

The Hornets deserved their home win over a Sheffield United side that lacked craft in the final third. Although there was some fortune involved with the only goal of the game, Rob Edwards’ front three of Joao Pedro, Emmanuel Dennis and Ismaila Sarr were unplayable at times.

Hornets trio can create havoc every week

That trio will create havoc every week in this division – as long as they don’t sulk if they are still there when the transfer window shuts. Edwards has no new injury concerns and will probably send out the same starting line-up, while Bruce revealed striker Karlan Grant is carrying a knock,  but it is not thought to be serious.

If the Baggies’ experienced coaching staff catch on to what went wrong in the first half at the Riverside and have the correct counter measures then they are clearly capable of getting the win, but there must be some doubt over whether they can given it is an issue that has dogged them for months. Albion have failed to win their last six against such systems – including against the likes of Bristol City, Birmingham and Stoke – while winning their last five against teams with back fours – including the two automatically promoted clubs last season.

Watford could win this if WBA’s weakness surfaces again, but we’re minded to only support the visitors in the draw no bet market as their woeful away results from last season are still fresh in the memory. A 1-0 away win could still be a good choice in correct score betting, however, as Albion failed to score in four of their last five home Championship contests against teams starting with a back-three system.
