      Winterthur vs Chiasso Predictions

Winterthur’s 3-0 defeat to Neuchatel Xamax on Tuesday saw them resume their losing ways after a shock 4-1 win against Swiss Challenge League champions Lausanne Sport.

Prior to that surprising victory Winterthur had lost two matches in a row, making their recent record look rather lacklustre with three wins, three defeats, and a draw in their last seven outings.

This puts them in 6th position in the table coming into the final match of the season, but a win on Friday could see them gain a very small amount of bragging rights of finishing in the top half of the table. It would also move them closer to their 4th place finish last season, although their points tally will be at least eight points worse off. But if you bear in mind that they will have played two fewer games because of Biel-Bienne’s disqualification then it doesn’t look too bad.

Chiasso occupy the position just below Winterthur, but they won’t be moving position unless they lose by a landslide margin. They are level on points with Wohlen below them, but the 8th placed side have already completed their league campaign because they were due to play Biel-Bienne in the final game of the season. Chiasso hold a goal difference advantage over them which means they would need to lose by a six goal margin to drop down a position, whilst Winterthur are six points clear of them in 6th.

The visitors did manage to get back to winning ways at the weekend as they beat 9th placed Le Mont 2-0 at home, ending their five match winless streak and halting their two match losing run.

Chiasso have proven quite difficult to break down this season, but their lack of winning mentality is troubling. They have only won two of their last 12 and only three of their last 22 outings. They have also not won back to back games since August.

Away from home Chiasso haven’t won since August either, with seven of their 13 away days resulting in a defeat. The last two away games have seen their usually sturdy defence broken down as well. They have conceded five in their last two away matches, and three of their last five games have seen at least three goals.

Winterthur have seen more than two goals scored in four of their last five home matches too, so I think odds of 8/11 for Over 2.5 Goals in a pressure-free final game of the season are good value. I’m backing a 3-1 Winterthur win at 14/1 too.
