Cagliari vs Verona Predictions

  • Cagliari have lost six of their last seven games, including last week’s alarming defeat to fellow strugglers Genoa.
  • Verona have only lost two of their last 10 matches.
  • Only Juventus, Napoli, and Inter have beaten Igor Tudor’s team since mid-January.

Islanders in trouble after dire defeat

A 1-0 defeat against Genoa has left Walter Mazzarri’s Cagliari in real danger of the drop, sitting just three points clear of the dotted line after losing six of their last seven matches. Cagliari may have claimed a 0-0 draw with Verona back in November, but that result came during a four-match unbeaten run for the Sardinians, and Verona should be expected to give a much better account of themselves on Saturday.

In losing six of their last seven Serie A contests, the Sardinian outfit have also fallen to three defeats in their last four home matches, and only the current bottom three possess worse home records than Mazzarri’s men after they picked up just 15 points from 17 home matches this term. Mazzarri’s men, meanwhile, have conceded 14 goals in their last seven games, keeping one clean sheet in their last 21 games.

Verona should be expected to worsen Cagliari’s poor defensive record after netting 59 goals in 34 league games – a record bettered only by Lazio, Napoli, and the two Milan sides in Serie A. Since January 9th, only Juventus, Napoli, and Inter have beaten Verona, and Tudor’s men have also earned results at Atalanta, Fiorentina, and Roma on recent road trips.

Verona worth backing against hapless hosts

With games against direct rivals Salernitana and Venezia, as well as a meeting with title favourites Inter still to come, Cagliari need to go for the throat against Serie A’s fifth-strongest attacking outfit.

Considering the impressive results picked up by Tudor’s men on their travels, as well as the excellent offensive returns of Giovanni Simeone and company, we’re tipping Verona to pile more misery on Cagliari on Saturday.

However, seven of Verona’s last nine games have featured goals at both ends, so a lively 2-1 away win could prove a decent correct score prediction.
