Betting Academy: Bet Builder & same-game multi guide
Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.
We’ve covered betting markets and given you a rundown of some of the best resources for researching football bets. Now it’s time to take a look at what seems to be becoming the future of betting.
You may have seen our bet builders section or noticed them in one of our match predictions. As they’re one of the most exciting, radical changes to the way people bet on football, we’ve got everything you need to know about them in this handy guide.
What is a bet builder?
Given the slim odds on single markets, many people no longer want to just back one bet. However, when you’re sitting down to enjoy the latest showdown between Europe’s giants you don’t want to chuck your bet in with an accumulator scattered with matches elsewhere.
That is where same-game multi bets – known as bet builders here on FST – come in. These are accumulators on a single game, allowing a punter to combine multiple markets from within the same match. It’s a great way to get a big price bet if you’re planning to only focus on one match.
What kind of markets can I back in a bet builder?
There are a wide range of markets available, ranging from match result betting all the way to cards and corners. You can combine a few low-price main markets into a bet builder, such as a team to win, both teams to score and over 2.5 goals to be scored.
However, bet builders offer the opportunity to bet on player actions and then combine them for bigger odds. You can back a player to score, have a shot, make an assist or be shown a card with most bookmakers.
All in all, it’s just a way to make multiple predictions around a game. It also can change the way you watch a match, as you keep track of the number of corners or the total shots on target by a team or specific player.
How do I place a bet builder bet?
Placing a bet builder bet is no more complex than any single or accumulator. There will usually be a tab which contains all of the markets which are available to be combined, then you comb through those and add your selections to your betslip.
The betslip will show you if you make any incompatible selections, such as backing a 1-0 away win alongside going with a home player to score. You’ll see the odds of your selection increase as you go and once you’re happy with the selections place the bet as you would with an accumulator.
What else should I know about bet builders?
The important thing to remember about bet builders is to look at the bet as a whole. For instance, if you were to back Kevin De Bruyne to score, Mo Salah to score and both teams to score as a treble in Man City vs Liverpool, then you’d effectively be placing a double. Backing a player on both sides to score makes the BTTS bet redundant, so you aren’t getting any bump in price for it.
If you were to swap out that BTTS tip for over 2.5 goals you would get a price bump, but seeing as you’re only backing one extra goal on top of the two you’ve already predicted you’ll hardly notice the difference.
Of course, we can use this to slightly bump odds in other bets. For example, instead of backing Man City to win and both teams to score as a market, you could back a City to win, Mo Salah to score double as a bet builder.

Now that we’ve covered all angles of betting on football matches, let’s take a bit of a longer view. Instead of a bet you can track over the course of 90 minutes, how about one that runs for nine months?
We’ve put together all you need to know about betting on football outrights, which span from predicting the next Premier League champion to betting on a player’s next move in the transfer market.
