Basel vs Lugano Predictions
Basel and Lugano both picked up wins in the Super League last weekend, and now they face-off against one another at 15:00 on Sunday at St. Jakob-Park. Basel cruised passed Grasshopper thanks to an excellent first half display, while Lugano edged passed Thun at home 2-1. Four points and four places separate the two teams in the Super League table, and with Basel not quite at their best this season Lugano will fancy their chances of getting something out of the game.
Three goals inside the first seventeen minutes against Grasshopper proved enough to guarantee Basel all three points from their trip to Zurich last weekend. Zuffi opened the scoring in the sixth minute and five minutes later Álvarez made it 2-0 to the visitors. A goal from Dutch striker van Wolfswinkel in the seventeenth minute all but ended any hopes the hosts had of a comeback, and saw Basel head into the break with a three goal cushion.
Frei squandered the opportunity to make it 4-0 in the sixty-seventh minute when he missed a penalty kick for the visitors, and Grasshopper managed to get one consolation goal late on through Rhyner which made the final score 3-1 to Basel.
With five league goals to his name this season, Ajeti leads the way in front of goal for Basel, but Zuffi is now just one goal behind his teammate on four Super league goals. Brazilian Carlinhos has four league goals for Lugano so far this season making him the clubs top scorer, while teammates Bottani and Gerndt have chipped in with three Super League goals apiece.
That man Carlinhos opened the scoring after just two minutes against Thun last weekend, following a neat assist from Bottani, but the visitors got themselves back onto level terms in the nineteenth minute through Tosetti. Lugano managed to restore their one goal advantage shortly before the half time interval thanks to a strike from Gerndt.
Thun pushed for an equalising goal throughout the second half with no luck, and despite having 57% of the overall possession, eleven shots during the ninety minute to their hosts three, as well as seven corners to Lugano’s four, Thun ended up losing the game.
Lugano certainly got lucky last weekend and they’re going to need that luck to continue if they are to get a result against Basel on Sunday. We’re confident that both teams will score and that over 2.5 goals will be scored in Sunday’s game, and have backed Basel to claim a narrow 2-1 win. Both teams have scored in each of Basel’s and Lugano’s last six matches. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in five of Basel’s last six matches, as well as in each of Lugano’s last six matches.
