Tip Reasoning

  • Both teams have scored in each of the last eight meetings between the pair and none of those games ended level
  • Bayern have kept just two clean sheets across their 12 league games this season
  • Bayern won both meetings between the pair in 2020 by a 4-2 scoreline

Bayern can show Leverkusen who’s boss

The Bundesliga’s current big two do battle at the BayArena hoping to clinch the Christmas number one spot – and reigning champions Bayern can show Leverkusen why they are still strong favourites for the silverware.

It is Peter Bosz’s boys who lead the way in Germany’s top-flight, having yet to suffer defeat in 12 games, but Bayern are only one point back and know they can leapfrog Leverkusen with victory.

Leverkusen deserve plenty of praise for their unbeaten start to the campaign, particularly when you consider talisman Kai Havertz was snapped-up by Chelsea and second top scorer Kevin Volland made his way to Monaco.

The goals have not dried up and Leverkusen have hit the net at least three times in six of their last eight league games.

But a tweak in tactics may be needed against Bayern, who will be well-suited to a straight shootout and have the firepower to overcome the challenge of any team in Europe.

That is how Hans-Dieter Flick’s men won the Champions League last season and big games are when they come to the boil.

Bayern have drawn three of their last five games – they shared the spoils in a six-goal thriller with Leipzig at the Allianz Arena – but prior to that they outscored Dortmund on their own patch in a 3-2 win.

The presence of prolific Pole Robert Lewandowski and the support from Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller still make Bayern Germany’s potent force.

Flick’s side have kept just two clean sheets in 12 league games, so are unlikely to keep Leverkusen at bay, but they do possess the greater attacking options and that may well prove the difference.

Both teams have scored in each of the last eight meetings between the pair and none of those games ended level, which bolster Bayern’s claims of prevailing a classic.

Take a flyer on Bayern winning 4-2. They have won both meetings between the pair by that scoreline in 2020 and defending is very much an afterthought for each of these teams.
