Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich Predictions
Borussia Dortmund are officially the best second-placed team of all time in the Bundesliga. With their current 57 point total, Borussia Dortmund would have been league leaders in 45 out of 52 previous Bundesliga campaigns after 24 matchdays. Dortmund are unbeaten in all competitive games in 2016 (9 wins and 1 draw) and have also won the last 7 matches in a row. They have also broken club history for the best home record in the Bundesliga with 10 wins and 1 draw from 11 games this season. Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel and Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola (who will be heading to take over at Manchester City this summer) have the best win records of any Bundesliga managers in history. This match will have so much importance to both teams, not only because of the fierce rivalry between the 2 teams, but more importantly for deciding the fate of the Bundesliga title for the 2015/2016 season. If Dortmund can come out of this game with all 3 points then they will only trail Bayern Munich by 2 points. If Bayern Munich win on Saturday, however, Dortmund’s title race will surely be over.
Bayern Munich have seen their own mortality as they dropped their first points at home this season with a 2-1 loss to Mainz 05 during the week. That makes breaking their 2012/2013 season record (29 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss) for highest number or points in a season (91 points) now basically unobtainable, but there is still plenty of glory to be had for Pep Guardiola and Bayern Munich. They are still top of the table by 5 points and strong favourites to win the title as well as still being in the Champions League (unlike Borussia Dortmund).
Bayern Munich may have the league’s top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski (23 goals in 24 games) but Borussia Dortmund have their own weapon in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (22 goals in 24 games), who has scored in all 11 of his last home games for Dortmund. The combined injuries of 3 of their most crucial central defenders Jerome Boateng, Javier Martinez and Holger Badstuber, clearly hadn’t cost Bayern Munich any results as Bayern continued to take results from weaker teams week in and week out with their top scoring duo, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller, raking in the goals. That was at least until the match last Wednesday at home to Mainz 05 during the week where Bayern Munich lacked their usual flair and seemed to encounter a few problems defensively. Against an in-form, unbeaten at home this season (10 wins and 1 draw) and unbeaten in 10 games across all competitions (9 wins and 1 draw) Borussia Dortmund, the seemingly “invincible” Bayern Munich may also encounter some difficulties here. Hence, Borussia Dortmund to win or draw and a result of 1-1 at 11/2 seems likely for this match.
