Chelsea vs Peterborough Predictions

Chelsea’s hopes of becoming the sole holders of the longest ever winning streak in the English top flight were ended on Wednesday as Mauricio Pochettino masterminded a 2-0 win over them at White Hart Lane, thanks to two Dele Alli headers.

This ends a run of ten wins in a row in all competitions and 13 in a row in the Premier League, but Antonio Conte’s men have already shown that they can bounce back from disappointment this season. They still hold a commanding five point lead at the top of the Premier League, and closest chasers Liverpool are now without star man Sadio Mane for a month and have the League Cup still to contest.

Chelsea were knocked out of the League Cup back in October, and without European football either there is a huge focus on both the Premier League and the FA Cup. I expect them to field a strong squad here, despite the lower tier opposition.

At home the hosts are looking unstoppable as well. They have won seven in a row in all competitions and have only failed to win once there this season. They have scored a huge 22 goals in these seven games and conceded just three times.

Peterborough won’t be fancying their chances much here. Their 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe on Monday made it three draws on the bounce, and although it extends their unbeaten streak to seven matches they have now dropped out of the League One playoff positions and sit in 8th position in the table.

Away from home they have fared fairly well recently, winning four and drawing two since their last defeat. However, a trip away to Stamford Bridge is an entirely different task to a trip away to Charlton.

It will be interesting to see just how much Conte changes for this clash. Eden Hazard and Diego Costa are the two top scorers for them but they were understandably left out of their League Cup defeat to West Ham earlier in the season due to their importance in the Premier League title race. The FA Cup will be seen as a more important match, but they could still be left on the sidelines to give them a rest after the festive season. Willian wasn’t in the first team against Spurs on Wednesday despite his excellent form, so that would suggest he is to start on Sunday. He looks the best chance for our anytime goalscorer predictions at 13/10 as he looks to add to his five goals this season.

Overall I’m not expecting much of a contest here. Chelsea have won five of their 11 home games this season by at least a three goal margin, and ten of those games were against Premier League opposition. Their defence has looked impenetrable at times so a clean sheet could be on the cards too, so I’m backing a Chelsea -2.0 Asian Handicap at 1.775 along with a 4-0 correct score predictions at 17/2.
