America Mineiro’s hopeless battle for survival came to an end in midweek with a 1-0 home defeat to Flamengo. What we’ve known for some time has now been confirmed in that they will be playing in Serie B again next term and they can have few complaints in truth. They’ve picked up a few results at home in recent months but they’ve been shocking away all season with no wins, 13 defeats and just 4 points to show from their away fixtures in what has turned out to be a solitary season in the top flight.

They have the worst goalscoring record in the division, averaging just 0.6 goals per game in the league this term and their last 4 away games have all ended in defeats to nil so it’s hard to see them getting a result from this game.

The one thing that makes it slightly less of a home banker is that Gremio are gearing up for a Cup final next week and are expected to make wholesale changes. They did something similar in their last home game and ended up getting beaten 3-0 by Sport Recife but America don’t have the sort of attacking quality required to seriously trouble even a second-string Gremio line-up.

Gremio have been very good defensively this term, particularly since appointing Renato Gaúcho in September and have kept clean sheets in a massive 65% of their home games. They’d only conceded 1 goal in 5 home games prior to the Sport game and that run included two 1-0 wins. They haven’t been that prolific in front of goal but the side that does line up here will be motivated to try and win a place in that cup final line-up or at least on the bench and they should still have enough quality to find a breakthrough at some point against a poor America side.
