      Tip Reasoning

The rot at the John Smiths Stadium continued to spread last weekend as the struggling Huddersfield fell to a potentially crucial 1-0 defeat at the hands of the resurgent Newcastle to continue their torrid run of form.

The Terriers defied the odds to stay in the top flight last season, but they simply don’t seem to have enough quality to do it for a second time. That defeat was their fourth loss on the trot in the Premier League, leaving them 19th in the table and 2 points adrift of the safety of 18th place.

18th place happens to be occupied by Southampton though, making this a potentially defining match in the fate of both teams’ seasons. Unfortunately for Huddersfield, The Saints happen to be making the trip up north in exceedingly high spirits.

Until last weekend Southampton were in a similarly dire situation as their hosts on Saturday, but new manager Ralph Hassenhuttl guided his team to a completely unexpected 3-2 win at home to the in form Arsenal. This lifted them out of the drop zone and brought confidence back into the club for the first time since summer.

It ended a run of 12 straight winless games in the league, and it was the first time they had scored 3 goals in a match since February when they beat the soon-to-be relegated West Brom.

The danger is far from past at St Mary’s Stadium though. Southampton are only outside the drop zone on goal difference and are without an away win since their 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in September. Despite their 3 goals last weekend they have still averaged fewer than a goal per game this season, although they will be pleased to be coming up against the league’s lowest scorers in Huddersfield on Saturday.

What this points towards is a low scoring game, and with both teams struggling to find the net we’re expecting at least 1 of them to falter. Southampton have seen both teams score in just 4 of their 9 league away games this season, while The Terriers have in an even lower 2 of their 9 home games.

The John Smiths Stadium has seen a total of just 14 goals this season, so we’re backing Both Teams Not to Score on Saturday. In the end we fancy Southampton to snatch the points as well, so we’re also opting for a 1-0 correct score predictions.
