Ingolstadt vs Borussia Dortmund Predictions
Ingolstadt’s start to the 2016/2017 Bundesliga campaign under new coach Markus Kauczinski, who joined them from 2. Bundesliga side Karlsruher, is one of the worst by any side in years. Ingolstadt’s main objective ahead of the new season was survival, but the consequence of transfer window sales has seen Ingolstadt’s performances drift far from those of the side praised last season for their defensive prowess. Ingolstadt are in bad shape with three key members of the back four leaving over the summer (Benjamin Hübner, Danny da Costa, and Ramazan Özcan) and the Bavarians come into this off the back of 6 consecutive Bundesliga defeats (8 consecutive defeats when including friendlies against 2. Bundesliga sides). Ingolstadt sit bottom of the Bundesliga for the first time in the club’s history with just one point from their opening 1-1 draw away to Hamburg in August.
Without a win in two Bundesliga match-days, Borussia Dortmund bounced back to form with a 2-1 win away to Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday and should be confident to add an important three points to their name when they travel to face the out-of-form Ingolstadt on Saturday. Star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put his missed penalty against Hertha Berlin behind him, getting himself on the score-sheet against Sporting with his 6th goal in 6 matches for Dortmund. He trails the Bundesliga’s leading goalscorer, Anthony Modeste of Cologne, by just one goal and is our favourite to score anytime at 4/5 with bet365.
Despite a whole host of players unavailable due to injury (see team news), Borussia Dortmund remain ours and the bookies’ favourites for this match at around 8/15. Simply put, Dortmund have a decent enough squad depth to cope with exactly these situations, as demonstrated in Tuesday’s trip to Portugal to face an almost fully fit Sporting side in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Ingolstadt have had almost no injury woes for the entire season and are still unable to produce results. Admittedly they have, arguably, had one of the hardest starts to the new season with matches against mainly top tier or inform sides – away to Bayern Munich, Borussia M’gladbach, and Cologne to name just a few. However, Borussia Dortmund are of the same class as these sides and given that their only Bundesliga goals (2) over their last 4 matches have come from last minute penalites, we can’t see how Ingolstadt could realistically expect to get anything here.
Ingolstadt’s home form is nothing to write home about, having scored just 1 goal in their last three home matches (failing to score in two of the last three) and have conceded exactly 2 goals in their last five at home. Though Dortmund have lost two of their three away matches this season, Bayer Leverkusen and the inform RB Leipzig are a few levels above what Ingolstadt are capable of. As such, Borussia Dortmund to win to nil at 13/8 and Borussia Dortmund to win 2-0 at 13/2 are our choice bets for this match.
