Millwall vs Newport County Predictions

  • Only two Championship teams have taken more home points than Millwall this season.
  • Newport are League 2’s third-worst away team having claimed just nine points.
  • Only one team has scored less away goals than Newport in League 2 this season.

Lion’s Den a tough place to go

It’s taken them a while to get going but after a fruitful festive period, Millwall are now back among the top-six challengers in the Championship. The Lions are now unbeaten in three, the last two of which they’ve won.

Millwall’s recent rise has been down to several factors; they’ve tightened up at the back and have generally got to grips with life under Gary Rowett. Perhaps the biggest factor is that they’ve regained their solidity at home, losing just one of their last nine at The Den. During that time, Millwall have only kept one clean sheet but they’ve scored two or more in seven out of nine, which is pleasing, especially since they’ve only conceded more than once on three occasions.

Newport floundering

For a few seasons now, particularly under the astute management of Michael Flynn, Newport have been one of the tougher teams to get the better of in League 2, as a few Premier League teams, namely Leicester and Tottenham, have found out in recent renewals of this competition. However, things have started to go awry this term.

Ahead of this match, Newport sit 14th in League 2 and have not won any of their last ten games, six of which they’ve lost. During that time, a lack of goals has been a big problem for The Exiles. They’ve only failed to score in three of their last ten, but they’ve not scored more than once since mid-October, which just won’t do. More worryingly, Flynn’s men have lost each of their last four on the road, conceding seven and scoring just two in the process.

Hosts to be too good

Newport have had a good relationship with this competition in recent years and was this game Rodney Parade, the Welsh outfit could be fancied, though their recent efforts, especially away from home are hard to ignore. In the betting, ‘Millwall to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’ catches the eye. Quite simply, not only are the hosts operating at a better level, but their recent home efforts have been superior to Newport’s travelling exploits. The Lions may not have scored more than two goals all that often, just once at home in fact, but they’re up against a low-scoring visiting side that has scored just one in their last three on the road in League 2 and just seven in their last ten, failing to score on five occasions. In addition, less than four goals have been scored in nine out of Newport’s ten away games, so plumping for the hosts to win without running riot stands out as the best option.
