Newcastle Jets vs Sydney FC Predictions

      • Newcastle Jets are in a terrible position at the moment, having sacked Ernie Merrick earlier this week. They remain bottom of the league with just one point from their last five games.
      • Sydney FC are top of the league, winning eight of their last nine games and holding a nine-point lead over their closest rivals.
      • Newcastle Jets have conceded 17 goals in their last five games, an average of 3.4 goals per game. In the same period they have scored just four times.
      • Sydney FC have scored 12 goals in their last five games but have kept just one clean sheet in that time.
      • Historically, Sydney hold a significant advantage over their opponents with 27 wins compared to Newcastle Jet’s seven victories.

Can Newcastle pull off one of the shocks of the season?

Newcastle Jets haven’t enjoyed this season at all, winning just twice and sitting bottom of the league after 11 games. Their recent form has forced them into sacking head coach Ernie Merrick and they come into this game without a permanent manager.

The side have lost four of their last five, picking up just one point out of their last possible 15 and things don’t look good for them this weekend as they welcome the league leaders. Anything other than a loss would be considered a good result but it could be another setback for the Jets this season.

Sydney FC come in as favourites; can they live up to their billing?

Sydney FC are in a rich vein of form, with a single draw in their last nine games being the only obstacle to 27 points from a possible 27. They have dispatched each team in the league with the exception of Western Sydney Wanderers and the match earlier this season between these two sides finished with Sydney running out 4-1 winners.

Defensively, Sydney have been a little suspect, keeping just two clean sheets all season, but the wealth of talent in attack means they have been able to score two or more goals in 10 of their 12 games so far. They average 2.33 goals per game and this weekend could see them continue that trend.

Is anything other than a Sydney win on the cards?

Sydney FC come into this game as odds-on favourites and it’s easy to see why. They have the better recent record, better historical record and are winning games with ease at the moment. With their ability to find the net and with Newcastle struggling to keep the opposition from breaching their defence, we’re very confident in predicting Sydney scoring over 1.5 goals this weekend.

Sydney should pick up another three points this weekend and it’s hard to see any other outcome as they face a Newcastle side without any confidence or manager. With that in mind, but also thinking about Sydney’s lack of clean sheets this season, we’re predicting Sydney to run out 3-1 winners.
