Newcastle vs Borussia Dortmund Predictions
- Newcastle have won six of their seven home matches this season
- Both teams have scored in six of Dortmund’s last eight away matches
- Dortmund have scored 14 goals in their last five games on the road
Excellent start for the Magpies
It was always going to be an interesting start to the season for Newcastle after they qualified for the Champions League, and so far Eddie Howe’s side have risen to the occasion.
Liverpool are the only team to have won at St James’ Park this season and while it is tempting not to pay too much attention to League Cup fixtures in this regard, the fact the Magpies knocked treble winners Manchester City out of that competition should not be ignored.
Despite the wealth of the club’s Saudi owners, Newcastle have not gone down the Galactico recruitment route, but they have a settled side and have recently shown their class in an 8-0 win at Sheffield United and be cruising to a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.
However, more pertinent with regard to their Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, they were just as rampant in a 4-1 win over French league winners Paris Saint-Germain in their last European match.
That spells bad news for Dortmund who have failed to score in their opening two ties and need to get something from their trip to the north east.
Germans could still make their mark
The Bundesliga outfit lost 2-0 in Paris and were then held to a goalless draw by Milan, so it stands to reason that they will get on the front foot on Wednesday, which could play into the home side’s hands.
There have been plenty of goals in BvB’s away games with 16 coming in their last five matches on the road, which have included a 3-1 victory at Hoffenheim and a 4-2 success at Freiburg on the last two occasions they have been on their travels.
So they know where the goal is, but there is little confidence that they will come out on top as they have tasted just one victory in their last seven Champions League away games.
Correct-score punters should therefore look at a 3-1 home victory.
Wilson can be Howe’s main man
Howe has the benefit of calling upon two excellent strikers and England forward Callum Wilson can hit the target again.
The former Bournemouth man has scored in four of his last six games for the Magpies and could get the nod ahead of Sweden’s Alexander Isak, who continues to do well when given the opportunity in a black-and-white-striped shirt.
Wilson was on hand to round off Saturday’s 4-0 win over the Eagles and he will be eager to prove himself at Champions League level by scoring his first goal in the competition.
