Newcastle vs Crystal Palace Predictions

Newcastle could actually do it. A few weeks ago they looked resigned to a return to the Championship, but a 3-0 win over Swansea has lifted hopes in St James Park. They followed this victory with a draw at home to Manchester City and then came back from the brink as they drew 2-2 at Liverpool last weekend.

This has taken them to within a point of safety. They are one point behind 18th placed Norwich and 17th placed Sunderland, although both teams have played a game less than the Tyneside team.

Despite the fact they are still in the relegation zone, they will feel like they have a realistic chance of staying up now. Their performances have improved dramatically, and if they can get a result against Crystal Palace on Saturday they should be able to win at Villa Park next weekend.

Crystal Palace will be on a bit of a high themselves. They beat Watford last Sunday to book their place in the FA Cup Final, but their Premier League results are less impressive. Including their FA Cup triumph, they have won just two of their last seven outings in all competitions and remain with just a single Premier League win to their name in 2016.

Fortunately for them, this singular victory was against Norwich, and has proved enough to all but guarantee them safety. They are in 16th position, but have an eight point advantage over the relegation zone, although both Sunderland and Norwich have a game in hand.

It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that they could end up relegated, but it’s unlikely given such a large points gap. This could prove a stumbling block as far as form goes, and motivation could be an issue now that the whole club are looking forward to a return to Wembley.

Newcastle’s defence has been troubling all season, but recently they have found some goals to counteract this weakness. They will be searching for those goals on Saturday, and as a result I think Crystal Palace will be able to exploit their defensive holes and get a goal. I don’t think this will be enough though; Newcastle have scored in each of their last six matches and have netted six in their last three.

At home they haven’t failed to score since Boxing Day, but they have only kept two clean sheets in these seven home games. Odds of 10/11 for Both Teams to Score look very good value, and I’m also going for a 2-1 Newcastle win at 8/1.
