PSG vs Nantes Predictions

  • PSG have won eight of the past nine editions of the Trophee des Champions (French Super Cup).
  • PSG have won all of their pre-season friendlies and covered a -1 handicap in three of four.
  • Nantes have failed to score in two of their four warm-up games and appear to lack a cutting edge after selling last season’s top scorer.

On-song PSG can keep Canaries quiet

Nantes go in search of more silverware when they take on a Paris Saint-Germain side without the services of Kylian Mbappe in the Trophee des Champions. Despite the loss of their star attraction due to suspension, PSG can justify their short odds for the contest in Tel-Aviv.

Les Parisiens have won eight of the past nine editions of the super cup, their only failure coming last summer when ex-boss Mauricio Pochettino fielded a shadow side against Lille.

This time, the Ligue 1 champions will probably include new signing Vitinha alongside Marco Verratti in midfield with Lionel Messi and Neymar taking two of the three attacking roles. Pre-season results and performances have been good enough to suggest the players are responding well to new boss Christophe Galtier – drafted in from the same club Nantes beat in the cup final late last season.

Top scorer exit leaves Nantes looking blunt

Nantes boss Antoine Kambouare was rumoured to be on his way elsewhere after that victory over Nice, but he has stayed on to guide them into Europe. If they are to have any joy there through, the Canaries will need to strengthen a squad that has lost Randal Kolo-Muani. He was the club’s leading goalscorer in Ligue 1 with 12 last term and had scored in each of the last three meetings with PSG.

Transfer talk still surrounds some of their main stars, so it will be a nervous time for the coach right up to the closure of the window. Nantes’ inability to score in two of their pre-season games against Rennes and Guingamp should be a worry here as PSG are likely to be tighter at the back under Galtier.

Hence, our favourite play is to back PSG to win with a bit to spare. Nantes may have won two of their last three meetings with the capital club, but without Muani and lacking much support in Bloomfield Stadium, this will be a tough one for them to come through. The 3-0 victory forecast reflects PSG’s superior form, ability and mood going into the game.
