Sweden vs Denmark Predictions
The Friends Arena in Solna will be buzzing come kick-off for this clash between these two local rivals. They have met several times in recent years with notable meetings including their convenient 2-2 draw at Euro 2004 which saw both sides progress at Italy’s expense and their abandoned clash in 2007 which was level at 3-3 going into the closing moments when a Danish fan ran onto the pitch to attack the referee shortly after the Swedes had been awarded a penalty.
However this isn’t really a great time for football in Scandinavia in general and neither Sweden nor Denmark are really the force they once were and both would be out were it not for the expansion of this tournament to 24 teams.
The Swedes are highly dependent on Zlatan Ibrahimovic and although their Under 21s won the European Championships in the summer, it’s still a little soon to expect great things of them.
Denmark’s undoubted star is Christian Eriksen and when he isn’t on song or doesn’t play, Denmark look a distinctly average team. Their final 3 qualifiers saw them fail to score a goal and labour to uninspiring 0-0 draws against Armenia and Albania prior to a 1-0 defeat in Portugal.
They’d almost certainly settle for a 0-0 draw here and are likely to come with a fairly cautious approach. Home advantage could be crucial in this tie and Denmark will be grateful to have it second.
There’s not much to choose between the sides in truth but in Zlatan, the hosts have a genuine match winner and given this may just be his last chance to play at a major tournament he will be keen to deliver the goods and put in another memorable performance in a Sweden shirt.
Denmark would give anything for a striker of his class and really haven’t offered much in front of goal of late and although Sweden’s recent results haven’t been impressive either they’ve still possessed an attacking threat and with home advantage, they look the more attractive bet at 11/8.
It’s hard to see many goals in this with the stakes so high and nobody wanting to make a mistake in such a big game. A narrow 1-0 home win looks one of the more likely outcomes and can be backed at 5/1.
