Tottenham Hotspur vs Sunderland Predictions

Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League campaign began in the worst possible way on Wednesday as a sold out Wembley witnessed Spurs lose 2-1 to their main challengers for group qualification, Monaco. The visiting French side went two goals up in the first half an hour, and despite Toby Alderweireld pulling one back for the hosts, they couldn’t find the equaliser.

Monaco are a good side, but this can be seen as somewhat of an upset at home, especially after their performance last weekend. They thrashed the out of form Stoke 4-0 away from home, with Heung Min-Son netting a brace and Harry Kane getting off the mark this season with a goal too.

The defeat to Monaco was also Spurs’ first loss of the season, with 1-1 draws against Everton and Liverpool coming either side of a win at home to Crystal Palace and before their exploits at Stoke last weekend. This leaves Tottenham Hotspur 5th in the Premier League table at this early stage of the campaign, but they’ll have to up their game a lot if they’re to challenge for the title again.

Sunderland were injected with a new sense of hope when they almost held Manchester City to a draw in David Moyes’ first game in charge of the Black Cats. They came away from the Etihad with nothing, but that was only thanks to a late own-goal from debutante Patrick McNair. This performance and result offered a lot of hope to the fans, but that will have been extinguished by now.

They followed it with a home defeat to north east rivals Middlesbrough, and despite a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury in the League Cup they couldn’t find the three points away to Southampton in the following Premier League match. Monday saw Everton come to town, and the visitors left with a 3-0 victory courtesy of a Romelu Lukaku hat trick. Sunderland are currently second from bottom in the table.

Sunderland have managed to find the net in four of their five competitive games this season though, and away from home they have a good record going forward. They’ve scored in 15 of their last 16 away days in the Premier League, with 11 of those games seeing at least three scored in total.

Spurs have only kept two clean sheets this season as well, and 11 of their last 16 home games in the Premier League have seen them concede a goal or more. Six of the last seven meetings between Spurs and Sunderland have resulted in Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams Scoring as well, so odds of 6/4 for this outcome on Sunday look very good value. I’m going for a 3-1 win for Spurs at 11/1 for my correct score prediction.
