Expectations at the start of the season will almost always be positive as enough time has passed for fans to forget their side’s shortcomings and enough new signings have come in to make them believe they have fixed the problems of the previous campaign. However, for Carlisle United those hopes have been short lived and they have had to endure a difficult start to the campaign. This Tuesday they have the opportunity to kick start their campaign when they welcome Port Vale to Brunton Park.

The hosts opened their season with a difficult 3-1 defeat away to current league leaders Exeter City, and although they were able to bounce back with a point at home to recently relegated Northampton Town, a heavy 5-1 defeat in the League Cup highlighted their flaws for all to see. However, the Cumbrians are a stubborn bunch and they were able to record their first win this weekend when they triumphed over struggling Cheltenham Town.

Speaking of sides with high hopes, Port Vale fans will be expecting their side to push as hard as they can for promotion come the end of the campaign. Their season started pretty well as they dominated Cambridge in a 3-0 victory, however back to back defeats against Colchester and Lincoln showed that they still have flaws for their opposition to exploit. Port Vale managed to get back to winning ways at the weekend when they managed to overcome Crawley and they will be hoping that they are able to make it back to back victories this Tuesday.

The hosts difficulties this season have been found largely thanks to their inability to outscore the opposition and they have yet to score more than once in a league game this term. This, combined with the fact that the visitors have failed to score in two of their four outings this season leads us to believe that backing there to be less than 2.5 goals scored is the way to go in this match.
