Liverpool to Win

Reason for tip

Liverpool have a superb recent Premier League record against Newcastle, who are still coming to terms with key departures and could struggle to hold back Andoni Iraola’s Reds.

Liverpool 2-1

Reason for tip

The Reds have scored at least twice in six of their last eight visits to St James’ Park and they should find their shooting boots again for another trip to the north east

Dominik Szoboszlai To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Dominik Szoboszlai looks set to be a key player for the Reds this season and his potential to score from free-kicks and long range means he is worth chancing in the anytime-goalscorer market.

Newcastle vs Liverpool Predictions

  • Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 19 Premier League meetings with Newcastle
  • The Reds have lost one of their last 27 league games in the month of August
  • Newcastle kept one clean sheet in their final 16 matches of last season

Magpies need to recover from tough summer

Both Liverpool and Newcastle are coming to terms with changes in the dugout but it seems that Andoni Iraola’s move to Anfield has gone a lot smoother than Matthias Jaissle being flown in to take charge of the Magpies.

Newcastle have had a tumultuous summer with the departure of stars Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes and that of Eddie Howe, the man who took the north-east outfit back into the Champions League.

The cloth has been cut and it has left them in a difficult position, so the visit of a team who they have failed to beat in their last 19 league meetings is hardly the ideal start to the new league campaign.

It will take all the will of the Geordie faithful to get the team to be competitive in this one.

Reds seem more settled than opponents

While Howe’s departure was a surprise, a managerial change at Liverpool was expected for much of the second half of last season and Iraola deserves his opportunity after impressing at Bournemouth.

The Reds won their first five games of last season, beating eventual champions Arsenal in the process, and they also enjoyed a dramatic early 3-2 in this fixture.

It is a game that rarely disappoints and this should be another entertaining encounter, but the Merseysiders, who are expected to be led by former Toon hero Alexander Isak, look to have the edge.

They are selected to come out on top and the fact they have scored at least twice in six of their last eight visits points to a 2-1 result, which should be of interest to correct-score punters.

Szoboszlai could find the target

The loss of Mo Salah will provide a hole in the Liverpool line-up but the chance is there for Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai to play a vital role.

No Reds player had more than his 23 shots on target in the league last season and his shooting prowess from long range and free-kicks mean he is a good goalscorer option particularly if, as expected, he takes over Salah’s penalty duties.
