Newport County’s late surge in form has put them in an excellent position to challenge for a playoff spot in League 2, but while they do hold their fate in their own hands it’s not going to be an easy task to break into the top seven.

Lincoln City are the best team in this division, but the hosts could be facing them at exactly the right time for them. The Imps also only managed a goalless draw on Easter Monday when they hosted Tranmere, but even after their recent three match winless streak they have mathematically sealed the League 2 title.

Now, heading into their penultimate game of the season, Lincoln City are eight points clear at the top of the table. Newport County will be hoping that their visitors’ minds are already on the summer break.

Of course, Lincoln won’t want to limp their way to the finish line after such a successful season, but finding motivation when there’s nothing left to play for could be a real issue for them. Newport County, meanwhile, are desperate for a win here to potentially send them into the playoff spots.

The Exiles have won three of their last five home games in the league, including a 3-1 win over promotion contenders Bury earlier this month. On Saturday they face a Lincoln City side who many have only lost five times all season, but who suffered one of those defeats in Carlisle in their last away match.
