Reims vs Nice Predictions

  • Reims have avoided defeat in six of their last ten Ligue 1 home games.
  • Nice have failed to win four of their last five away league contests (Lost 3, Drawn 1).
  • Reims have avoided defeat in six of their last seven head-to-head meetings with Nice.

Nice not yet the team Galtier wants them to be

Nice need to win at Reims on the final day of the Ligue 1 season in order to pressure Strasbourg for fifth spot, but the value lies elsewhere with the odds are too skewed in their favour. Les Aiglons are certainly good enough to win at Stade Auguste-Delaune II, but they arrive on the back of three defeats in their last four road trips and a scratchy 1-0 victory at relegated Bordeaux.

Christophe Galtier’s side have become harder to trust of late, going down 1-0 with an anaemic performance in the cup final and then flopping spectacularly 3-1 at Lille, the coach’s former club, just last weekend. That defeat allowed Strasbourg to push them out of fifth places and leaves them needing to produce much better here.

But Nice’s xG and other analytical metrics have been trending downward for some time and suggests there are underlying issues that are preventing this team from fulfilling their goals. Goalkeeper Walter Benitez has helped Nice to the largest post-shot-expected-goals – a measure of the quality of shots faced –  overperformance in France.

Reims have held top teams at home already

The recent run of poor away results looks to have been inevitable rather than surprising when viewed this way. Reims have avoided defeat in six of their last ten Ligue 1 home games and will want to end the season in positive fashion, even if they have nothing to play for.

Hence the pick here is for the hosts to get something and the double chance market offers a decent return given how much the match result odds favour Nice. A 1-1 draw is not beyond the capacity of a home team that has held the likes of Lyon, Strasbourg and Monaco at this ground already this season.
