St Johnstone vs Aberdeen Predictions

  • Aberdeen play their first competitive match since August 1
  • St Johnstone have lost once since the start of February
  • The hosts have lost once in nine at home
  • Aberdeen have won one of the last six clashes between these two

Aberdeen make return

Having been due to play this clash in the second round of the season, Aberdeen finally make their trip to Perth. The Dons had eight of their players in self-isolation before this clash was called off, which forced Aberdeen to miss three matches at this early point of the campaign.

While they can finally return to action, it remains to be seen how their layoff will impact them going forward. Having their season preparations blown up before their European qualifiers even started is an issue, as is the fact that the Dons last played a competitive match on August 1. Our predictions point to that being the decisive factor here.

Progress for Saints

While Aberdeen’s campaign was on hold, St Johnstone have made progress. They were able to pick up their first victory of the season at the weekend, winning at Kilmarnock. They look solid, with their only defeat so far coming at Ibrox.

That loss to Rangers was the only time that St Johnstone have lost since the start of February. They come into this clash with just one defeat in their last nine home matches in the Premiership, while the Saints can point to a 1-0 win at Aberdeen back in February to prove their credentials here. They’ve lost just once in six meetings between the pair, which should increase Aberdeen’s worries.

Saints should have the edge

With Aberdeen returning from their break, we expect them to come into this clash a little off the pace. The Saints have looked solid of late and their recent clashes with the Dons have seen things stay quite level. That should give the hosts an edge in this clash.

It’s worth remembering that Aberdeen looked really poor before they had to quarantine, so they can’t be in perfect shape as they return to action. They looked like they needed minutes after their five month lay-off, so we are siding with St Johnstone in our predictions here, with a narrow 1-0 home win our pick.
