Aberdeen vs Partick Thistle Predictions

Aberdeen’s new season hasn’t got off to the greatest of starts, which is bad news considering they are facing competition for the runners up spot. Hearts threatened to challenge them last season, and with Rangers now back in the top flight they are under threat of losing the 2nd place that they have enjoyed over the last few years.

They began the campaign by being knocked out of the Europa League qualifiers by Maribor, and then their Scottish Premiership opener saw them play out a dismal goalless draw at St. Johnstone. They did then progress in the Scottish League Cup with a 2-1 win at Ayr United, but they failed to score again in the Scottish Premiership when they hosted Hearts in a game that ended goalless again.

This is a stark contrast to last season’s start when they won their first eight top flight matches, a run which set them up to push Celtic for the Premiership title. At their current rate there will be no title challenge emanating from Aberdeen this season.

Partick Thistle have only played one league game this season due to Celtic’s obligation to finish off their International Champions Cup campaign at the weekend, but they still sit above their opponents. They won their opening game 2-0 against Inverness CT after winning all four of their Scottish League Cup group matches before the start of the league season.

However, they couldn’t continue their winning streak when they lost 3-1 to Dundee United in the League Cup last Tuesday, and a win at home against the disappointing Inverness CT doesn’t mask the fact that they are expected to finish in the bottom half of the table this season.

They finished in 9th position last term, clearing the relegation playoff position by a comfortable ten points, even after winning just one of their final six matches.

Aberdeen have looked very lackluster in attack so far this season. They have failed to score in either of their league matches so far but have at least managed to keep a clean sheet. In fact, six of their nine competitive games so far this season have seen fewer than three goals scored, including five of their last six.

This makes odds of 8/11 for Under 2.5 Goals look an attractive backing, especially since Partick Thistle’s league opener only saw two goals scored as well. That’s what I’m backing, but ultimately I think Aberdeen will snatch the points so I’m going for a 1-0 correct score prediction at 5/1 as well.
