Aston Villa vs Everton Predictions
Remi Garde may still be optimistic about Aston Villa’s chances of survival, but the rest of us aren’t. They threatened to mount an unlikely comeback in January when they went on a five match unbeaten streak in all competitions, but they have since slipped once again by losing four of their last five matches. This leaves them an insurmountable looking eight points adrift of the Premier League safe zone, and it would take a brave man to back them to stay up this season.
Everton’s Roberto Martinez had been feeling the pressure a bit a few months ago when the Everton faithful grew tired of seeing their team fail to win. The boos that the Everton players were faced with seemed to light a spark inside of them though, and they come into this match having won four of their last five. This seems to be built around a new found defensive solidity. Previously they had conceded eight goals in three games and were renowned for their ability to throw games away despite their incredibly talented attack, but they come into this game having only conceded one goal in their last five outings.
Everton’s new found defensive solidity will prove a problem for Aston Villa, as the hosts come into this game having only scored 21 league goals all season. To put this in perspective, Everton have scored 21 goals since the turn of the year. To put this into even more perspective, Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley have scored three more Premier League goals than the entire Villa squad this season. The hosts’ last six games have seen them score three times, and their four defeats from their last five outings means that the pressure is starting to get unbearable at Villa Park again.
Everton’s comprehensive wins at Bournemouth, Stoke, and Carlisle recently will have done wonders for the squads’ confidence levels, and they will go into this game knowing that they can get a win and push themselves back into the top half of the Premier League and back above their arch rivals Liverpool. The visitors have the added advantage of having had over a week’s rest from playing due to their match being postponed to make way for the Capital One Cup Final. They are also unbeaten in their last seven away games in the Premier League.
The added freshness certainly won’t work against them, and add that to the difference in quality and form and an Everton win at odds of 4/5 look incredibly good value. A comfortable 2-0 scoreline looks like the most likely outcome to me as well.
