Cagey contest expected between Auxerre and Nice

This has the makings of a tight encounter and under 2.5 goals is the bet when Auxerre host Nice in Ligue 1 on Sunday. Five of Nice’s last seven league games have had fewer than three goals and, although the last head-to-head between these sides produced four goals, four of the previous five went under 2.5 goals.

Nice are one place above Auxerre in the table, but both teams have lost more games than they’ve won this season. Auxerre sit 16th with six wins and 16 defeats, while Nice are 15th with seven wins and 15 losses.

Auxerre have kept four clean sheets in their seven Ligue 1 home games against other bottom-half teams this season, conceding an average of just 0.43 goals a game in those matches. In contrast, Nice have failed to win five of their seven away games against these sides.

Auxerre were 3-1 winners over Angers in their last Ligue 1 home game, but Nice have failed to win any of their last three away games.

The visitors’ last few games have not featured many goals, with under 2.5 goals being a winning bet in Nice’s last four Ligue 1 games. Five of their last six away matches have gone under 2.5 goals.

This could be a low-scoring game. Auxerre have not shipped a goal in four of their last six Ligue 1 home games, while Nice kept a clean sheet last month against fourth-placed Lille, when they drew 0-0.

It could be hard to separate these two sides, with the 1-1 draw looking a decent correct-score bet. Both teams had scored by the break the last time they met in Ligue 1 in August, and both teams have scored in Auxerre’s last three league games.
