Basel vs Eintracht Frankfurt Predictions

  • Basel have won six of their last seven Europa League games
  • The hosts have won their last six home games in the Europa League
  • Basel have won five of seven home games in all competitions
  • Frankfurt have scored in 21 of their last 22 away games in this competition

Boost for Basel

The hosts noticeably tailed off towards the end of their Super League campaign, drawing four of the final five matches. That was largely due to falling too far behind the leaders. A return to the Europa League should give them a boost, especially with a three-goal lead to protect.

The last side to lose the first leg of a two-legged knockout tie by 3+ goals in the Europa League and still progress was Valencia in the 2013-14 quarter-finals against Basel. However, they lost the second leg away in Spain. Basel have been stronger at home than away in the Europa League this term, so our predictions point to another victory for them.

Basel impressing in Europe

The hosts have been in lethal form in Europe so far this season, hitting 19 goals so far. That’s been largely down to excellent finishing at home, where they’ve carved out almost 17 chances per game, converting 14% of those.

Basel have also won six of their last seven Europa League games (L1) including each of the last four without conceding. They’ve managed six consecutive home wins in this competition, claiming seven wins in their last eight here, dating back to 2016.

Meanwhile, Basel have claimed five wins in seven matches at home in all competitions, going unbeaten in eight games at their own ground. That should see them progress at the expense of Frankfurt.

Hosts to edge it on the night

The visitors haven’t played a competitive game since late June, ending their Bundesliga campaign with a late rally to finish ninth. However, they won just five of 11 games since the restart. That poor form mixed with almost six weeks without a competitive fixture doesn’t inspire hope for the visitors’ chances.

We think Basel are good value for the victory in this second leg. Frankfurt have already been inconsistent in the Europa League this term, winning only twice in six games – losing three times. We’re backing the hosts for the victory, while our correct score prediction is a 2-1 victory given that Frankfurt have scored in 21 of their last 22 away games in this competition.
