Bourg-Peronnas vs Lyon Predictions
- Bourg-Péronnas have 30 goals in their last 21 games but they’ve also conceded 26 times during this period.
- The hosts have been in solid form but lost their last match 5-1.
- Lyon have dealt very well with weak teams in recent weeks with their wins over Toulouse and Nîmes, they also have scored eleven goals in their last five matches in all competitions.
- Lyon have only failed to get past the first stage of the Coupe de France in one of their last 15 attempts.
Uncertain Lyon will need to be wary
On paper this should be an easy task for Lyon as they travel to the home of a third division side for this cup match. Les Gones usually progress okay in this competition but haven’t won it since 2012 so Rudi Garcia will be motivated to start his first season at the club with some silverware, first he needs to get past Bourg-en-Bresse.
Lyon didn’t finish 2019 in glowing form with just two wins in their final six matches. The two victories both came against teams in the bottom two at the time of playing so aren’t anything to shout about. Lyon struggled to really show their quality against teams more their size like Rennes (0-1), Leipzig (2-2) and Lille (0-1). They scored eight goals in the two wins but outwith that they scored just three goals in the other four clashes with more difficult opponents.
Lyon absolutely should be doing better in the league at the moment given the size of club and funds available to them but they currently sit 12th with a less than desirable away record which could be at risk here. They have won just three of their last eight matches on the road and will need to be on top of their game here as they make the short trip north.
Minnows quietly confident of an upset
This will be Bourg-Péronnas’s first Coupe de France match against Ligue 1 opposition since their 9-0 defeat at home to Marseille in February 2018. They had an earlier run in with Ligue 1 side Reims in the Coupe de la Ligue where they made a much better account of themselves in a narrow 2-1 defeat. Since that loss Bourg-Péronnas have been in fine form and will be quietly confident of snatching a result against Lyon here.
They have won five of their last seven games in all competitions with their most notable victory in this run coming in the Coupe de France as they beat current 3rd placed Ligue 2 side Troyes 1-0. Bourg-Péronnas had a reality check in their last match though as they were thrashed 5-1 by fourth place Lyon Duchère. It was quite the knock for Bourg-Péronnas but they have consistently showed in recent times that they can bounce back from defeats with them still to lose consecutive matches in all competitions this season.
Bourg-Péronnas have a tremendous home record which they’ll be looking to put to good use here against a shaky Lyon side. They’ve lost just one of their 13 matches at the Stade Marcel-Verchère under Karim Mokeddem which makes us think that they could pose Lyon a problem here.
The Ligue 1 team to show their quality?
Bourg-Péronnas are a very attacking side with 30 goals in their 21 matches this season and with Lyon keeping just one clean sheet in their last twelve matches, we’re backing the hosts to get on the scoresheet. However, the Championnat National 1 side are also very weak defensively with them conceding the most goals of all teams in the top ten of the third tier. As a result we’re backing the Ligue 1 team to get the win as they have dealt very well with weaker teams in recent weeks. Bourg-Péronnas did lose their last match by a large margin and that will still be fresh in the minds of the players so we’re expecting the visitors to win 3-1. We doubt it’ll be as much of a whitewash given the cup atmosphere but we still see Lyon starting 2020 off on the right foot here.
