Uruguay to Win

Reason for tip

Uruguay have beaten their last three Concacaf opponents: Mexico 4-0, Panama 3-1 and USA 1-0. Meanwhile, Canada’s record against South American sides at the Copa America is won 1, drawn 2 and lost 2.

Uruguay 2-0

Reason for tip

Canada have scored only twice in five games in the 2024 Copa America while Uruguay have kept three clean sheets at the tournament. A 2-0 win for Uruguay looks about right in the circumstances as they were well worth their 1-0 win over USA in the group stages and thrashed Mexico 4-0 in a pre-tournament friendly.

La Celeste aim to finish on a high

Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay can end their Copa America campaign on a high note in a Copa America third-place play-off clash against Jesse Marsch’s Canada that will draw the attention of football fans in West Yorkshire.

The clash of two former Leeds United coaches adds extra spice to proceedings at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina – where some shocking scenes played out after Uruguay’s 1-0 semi-final defeat to Colombia.

La Celeste stars Darwin Nunez and Maximillian Araujo leapt to the defence of family members in the crowd after a brawl broke out and it remains to be seen what punishments could be forthcoming. Assuming both men can feature, then they will both no doubt be as fired up as Bielsa might be to get one over the man who replaced him at Elland Road.

Canucks lack the knack of scoring right now

El Loco switched tactics for the semi-final, deploying a back three and very high wing-backs who were basically wingers. It worked to an extent as Uruguay dominated and created several great chances to open the scoring, but neither Nunez or Luis Suarez could find their shooting boots.

Canada gave it a good go in their semi-final against Argentina too, hitting only two fewer total shots than Lionel Scaloni’s side and managing only one fewer on target.

But a lack of ruthlessness has been an issue throughout a tournament where they have created enough chances to triple their final tournament tally of two goals. Uruguay, who have beaten their last three Concacaf opponents like Canada without really breaking sweat, should run out winners in this game and it would no surprise to see the Canucks draw a blank again.
