Uruguay to Win

Reason for tip

Uruguay have won six of their eight matches under Diego Alonso, keeping six clean sheets. Canada, meanwhile, have suffered three defeats in their last five games – all of which have come outside Canada.

Uruguay 1-0

Reason for tip

Uruguay have conceded just two goals under Alonso’s management, and have never shipped multiple goals under him. Canada have not beaten South American opponents in 22 years, but have only conceded more than a single goal once in their last 17 games.

Canada vs Uruguay Predictions

  • Uruguay have only lost one of their last eight games.
  • Diego Alonso’s men have kept six clean sheets during that run, including against Mexico, the USA and Chile.
  • Canada have not beaten a side from CONMEBOL since downing Colombia in 2000.

Canada step up World Cup preparations

Excitement is building ahead of Canada’s first FIFA World Cup campaign since 1986, and Tuesday’s clash with Uruguay in Slovakia represents the penultimate friendly being played by John Herdman’s side ahead of their opener against Belgium in November. While Canada have won two of their last three games, La Celeste are experienced World Cup campaigners and will offer a stern examination of their credentials.

Canada saw off World Cup hosts Qatar on Friday, but have struggled against more established sides of late, even losing at the likes of Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama in their last five matches. Canada’s last win against South American opposition, meanwhile, came against Colombia in their 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup triumph, and they have lost three of their last five games outside Canada.

Uruguay, meanwhile, suffered a shock friendly loss to Iran last week in a match which saw Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo go down injured after less than a minute, but that represents their only defeat in their last eight matches. Indeed, Diego Alonso has posted six wins in his eight matches since taking the helm, overseeing six clean sheets during that time. Under his watch, Uruguay – who still boast the attacking talents of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani alongside Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez – have conceded just two goals, one to Iran and one to Venezuela.

Celeste set for friendly win

Given their excellent defensive record and reputation for grinding out results, backing Uruguay to stifle Canada’s counter-attacking style and clinch a friendly win seems a prudent play.

Meanwhile, backing Alonso’s solid outfit to keep another clean sheet in a 1-0 victory appears a decent correct score prediction – Canada have only conceded multiple goals in one of their last 17 contests.
