Las Palmas vs Sporting Gijon Predictions
Las Palmas and Sporting Gijon were both promoted to the top flight last season but only the hosts are assured of staying there. The side from the Canary Islands have put in a stunning run of form at just the right time and their 3-1 victory away to Deportivo La Coruna on Monday night has pushed them into the top half of the table. It was their 6th victory in the space of 7 matches so they will be full of confidence coming into this game.
They have won 5 of their last 9 home matches which is a good record when you consider all of the top 3 sides have visited Gran Canaria during that period. They restricted Barcelona and Real Madrid to narrow 2-1 wins and have got the better of struggling sides like Getafe, Granada, Valencia and Real Betis during that run.
Sporting Gijon by contrast are struggling in 18th place and they have failed to score in 5 of their last 6 matches with a shock win against Atletico Madrid the only exception. They are only 2 points from safety though and could move out of the drop-zone with a win here although clearly this is not a good time to be playing Las Palmas and they can only hope that some complacency creeps in for the Canary Islanders.
Sporting’s away form has been really poor and they’ve lost 10 of their last 13 away games and could only manage a goalless draw at bottom club Levante last time out. The likes of Barca loanee Alen Halilović are struggling for form and they could name one or two inexperienced players here in a desperate bid to improve their attacking prowess. It’s hard to see it making much difference though and Las Palmas are looking a very solid all-round unit all of a sudden especially at home so consider backing Las Palmas to win at 10/11.
