Carrick demanding a United response

Manchester United are aiming to bounce back from last weekend’s shock 2-0 loss at Hull when they take on another newly-promoted side in Ipswich at Old Trafford on Sunday.

It was a dismal afternoon for United at the MKM Stadium and Michael Carrick will demand a response from his side against an Ipswich team they have a strong record against.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in the last eight meetings between the two sides, a run that was kickstarted by a memorable 9-0 victory at Old Trafford in March 1995.

United are also unbeaten in their last eight home league games against the Tractor Boys, although they were made to work hard for the most recent of those successes – a 3-2 win in February 2025 when they played more than half the match with ten men after Patrick Dorgu’s sending off.

Ipswich can pose a threat

United’s strong record against Ipswich, coupled with their need to bounce back, should see them get over the line on Sunday, but the visitors have started life back in the Premier League strongly and can get on the scoresheet.

Gary O’Neil’s team were 2-1 winners over one of last season’s surprise packages, Sunderland, on the opening weekend and they followed that up with a 3-1 EFL Cup success over Leicester.

Ipswich have scored in 16 of their last 18 competitive matches and they will be facing a United team that failed to keep a clean sheet in their final six home fixtures of last season, despite winning five of those games.

Rashford back in the headlines

There have been mixed feelings about Marcus Rashford’s return to the United first-team fold after last season’s loan spell at Barcelona, but the England star was a bright spark when he was introduced as a half-time sub against Hull, creating a team-high four chances.

With Carrick likely to ring the changes for this game, Rashford could find himself back in the starting line-up and his 29 goal involvements for Barca last season prove he is still capable of delivering on the top stage.

Rashford has not scored for United since a brace against Everton in December 2024, which came a week after he opened the scoring in a 1-1 draw with Ipswich at Portman Road.
