Real Madrid vs Wolfsburg Predictions
Until their 2-0 defeat away to Wolfsburg in the first leg of the quarter-final, Real Madrid were unbeaten in this years Champions League and looked dominant throughout the competition. They have won seven from nine games in the competition so far, with this 2-0 defeat and their 0-0 draw at PSG in the group stages the only blemishes on an otherwise perfect record. Carrying the momentum of their huge El Clasico victory over domestic rivals FC Barcelona a few weeks back, and their 4-0 demolishing of Eibar last Saturday, the Madrid giants are overwhelming favourites to beat Wolfsburg in this match.
German club Wolfsburg entered new territory this season having reached the Champions League knockout stage for the first time ever, after finishing top of Group B in the group stages. Wolfsburg overpowered the reigning Belgian Pro League champions KAA Gent in their round-of-16 matchup, beating them 3-2 in their first leg away from home and securing a place in the final eight with another win, 1-0 at home, in the second leg. Wolfsburg overcame their biggest challenge yet as a club, as they hosted, and defeated, Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid in the quarter-final stage last Tuesday, a night which will be remembered as one of their biggest triumphs in club history.
Real Madrid were unimpressive and lacked their usual flair in the first leg, while credit should be given to Wolfsburg’s goalkeeper Diego Benaglio for pulling out some impressive saves to keep a clean sheet against one of the most dangerous attacks in the world. Christiano Ronaldo was denied the opener, with his goal being disallowed for offside, followed by a questionable penalty decision against Madrid, which Ricardo Rodriguez coolly slotted away, and a moment of quality from Wolfsburg meansg Real Madrid come into this match 2-0 down on aggregate.Wolfsburg have played an impressive Champions League campaign so far, but their general form elsewhere in the Bundesliga has been far from stellar. They have only won one from their last five in the league (W1 D2 L2) and away from home their recent form is even worse (W1 D1 L3) – with their only away win since last October being against Hannover 96, who sit rock bottom of the Bundesliga. Real Madrid, themselves, may have had a few bumps along the road this season, particularly under ex-manager Rafael Benitez, but their form at home at the Santiago Bernabeu has been impressive, only dropping eight points – a defeat a piece to tough rivals Athletico Madrid and FC Barcelona and then a surprising draw to Malaga. Excluding these, Real Madrid have been demolishing weaker teams at home, scoring an average of almost 4 goals a game in front of their home crowd – notable wins include a 10-2 thrashing over Rayo Vallecano, a 7-1 over on Celta de Vigo and back to back 4-0 wins against Sevilla and Eibar in their last two home games.
Wolfsburg may be performing on the highest stage the club has ever achieved and go into this game with a 2-0 advantage, but they have the second worst away form in the Bundesliga this season and they just don’t have the same quality as some of Real Madrid’s household names like Christiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez. Real Madrid need just two goals to take the game to extra time and three goals to qualify for the next round, providing Wolfsburg don’t score an away goal, which Madrid are more than capable of when considering there 4 goals per game average. If there are any teams skilled and experienced enough to overcome a 2-0 deficit at home under pressure, Real Madrid is one of them. Combining the analysis above with the below statistics, expect Real Madrid to return to form and qualify for the semi-finals with a result of Real Madrid win 3-0 at 8/1 to be a likely outcome.
