Royal Blues refreshed ahead of new campaign

Schalke, one of the biggest clubs that still remain outside the German top flight, take on Eintracht Braunschweig in the opening round of 2.Bundesliga fixtures this weekend with a renewed sense of hope.

Sweeping cuts across the playing squad and coach thing structure were made after last season’s mid-table finish and a raft of new signings have been made this summer.

The Royal Blues have already brought in eleven new players with Moussa Sylla considered the biggest coup so far while Ron-Thorben Hoffmann and Anton Donkor have moved from Braunschweig to Gelsenkirchen.

Schalke can strike at least twice

Eintracht did cause a stir this week when they captured Walid Ould-Chikh, who recorded 20 goal contributions last season, ahead of some 2.Bundesliga rivals, but it is uncertain if the Dutchman will feature in this clash.

They will also be much-changed from last season after 12 new arrivals and the timing of this clash makes it hard to predict which team will get out of the blocks faster.

It may be wiser to back the home side to grab a couple of goals. The Royal Blues bagged two or more in four of their last six home fixtures last term and have the quality to exploit any issues in Braunschweig’s remodelled backline.
