Strasbourg to Win

Reason for tip

Strasbourg are a different animal this term with Chelsea’s owners investing in the side and appointing Patrick Viera as manager. The hosts look good for a top-half finish at minimum, which is a concern for a Lyon side who lost seven of nine visits to the top 10 last term. The visitors have been weakened since their seventh-placed finish last term and could struggle in their opener.

Strasbourg 2-1

Reason for tip

For all their struggles aaway last term, Lyon scored in 84% of their trips and they lost to nil on only two occasions. They should be able to net in this visit to Strasbourg, but the hosts look strong enough to edge this encounter.

Strasbourg vs Lyon Predictions

  • Strasbourg have improved this summer thanks to a takeover from Chelsea’s owners
  • The hosts have kept their squad together and improved, with Patrick Viera an upgrade in the dugout too
  • Lyon lost seven of nine visits to top half sides last term and they’ve lost key players this summer

New era for Strasbourg

This summer has been a turning point for Strasbourg, following their 15th-place finish in Ligue 1 last term. The club was bought by Chelsea’s owners with a view to loaning out players to a top European league. However, the American investors have backed their new side.

Strasbourg’s takeover allowed them to stand firm when it came to major departures, so they’ve kept together their standout players. On top of that, they’ve invested almost £30 million in Abakar Sylla and Emanuel Emegha, while talented Brazilian Angelo has joined on loan after arriving at Stamford Bridge.

The ambitious club picked Patrick Viera as their new manager and he will be looking to improve on last season’s finish.

Lyon could struggle

Lyon must be looking towards Strasbourg with a degree of envy, with the visitors suffering some major departures this summer. Houssem Aouar, Moussa Dembele, Romain Faivre and Malo Gusto are all gone, with Castello Lukeba set to follow.

Their incomings haven’t exactly been eye-catching, so Lyon head into the new campaign looking vulnerable. Last term they lost seven of nine away clashes with sides in the top-half and Strasbourg should expect to be around that level. With the hosts improving and the visitors getting weaker, back a home win.
