Tip Reasoning

  • Strasbourg’s good-looking home record is skewed by having not yet faced any team currently in the top nine.
  • Marseille have won their last two Ligue 1 away games 1-0.

Miserly Marseille can play scrooge in Strasbourg

The rest of Ligue 1 will be watching to see how Jorge Sampaoli sets his Marseille team up to take on in-form Strasbourg on Sunday.

The Racers have been one of the surprise packages of the season and, having narrowly avoided the drop in 2020-21, now sit proudly in sixth place. It can hardly be said to be fluky either because Julien Stephan’s side have got good results against top-six contenders like Nice, Monaco and Lens.

However, their excellent home record does bear some scrutiny ahead of Marseille’s trip north as Strasbourg are yet to face a team of their calibre at the Stade de la Meinau.

Sampaoli so tactically astute

Sampaoli has proven to be very light on his feet tactically, switching Marseille between a number of different formations and usually with the same end result – a clean sheet. Despite several changes, Les Phoceens recorded yet another in a 1-0 midweek win over Lokomotiv Moscow. If they can smother Strasbourg’s usual busy 5-3-2 formation with blanket coverage in midfield, then three points can be theirs as well.

While Strasbourg have been unbeaten in their last six games, the underlying stats suggest they have been getting away with it a bit. Monaco and Nantes probably felt they deserved victories in matches that finished level and Nice should have scored in last week’s 3-0 home defeat.

OM have too much quality for the hosts in this and can win at the generous odds against price being offered ahead of kick-off. Without Europe to distract them until February now, Sampaoli’s men could embark on a run that takes them closer to the top in the next few weeks. A 1-0 win is forecast of course because Marseille’s last two away victories have been by that scoreline and never once did those games look like finishing any other way once they had scored.
