Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle Predictions
- Tottenham have beaten Borussia Dortmund and drew with Manchester City in their last two home fixtures
- Newcastle have only won two of their 12 Premier League away games this season
- The Magpies have lost three Premier League matches on the spin
Spurs showing signs of improvement
The jury very much remains out on Thomas Frank at Tottenham and his cause was not helped by Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Manchester United, although there were extenuating circumstances for that defeat, notably Cristian Romero’s first-half red card when the score was still goalless.
Prior to the loss at Old Trafford, Spurs were unbeaten in four matches, a run that included a home win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Manchester City on their own patch.
That has given Frank and his team some much needed home momentum – although they have still only won twice at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium all season in the league – something they can improve upon when out-of-sorts Newcastle head to the capital.
Magpies have hit a wall
Newcastle had been battling on four fronts prior to last week’s EFL Cup exit at the hands of Manchester City, but those efforts appear to be taking their toll, with the Magpies having only won one of their last nine matches across all competitions.
Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat to Brentford was Newcastle’s third Premier League loss on the bounce and their record away from St James’ Park is particularly poor, as they have won only two of their 12 top-flight away games this term.
Another defeat could be on the cards for Eddie Howe’s team but they have scored exactly one goal in each of their last three away fixtures, so a narrow 2-1 Spurs win is the preferred correct score pick.
Solanke making timely return
Dominic Solanke’s recent return from a long-term ankle injury has been a real boost for Spurs, with the England international having scored three goals across his first two home starts of the season against Dortmund and Man City.
Solankel will be confident of continuing his home hot streak against a Newcastle side he has a good record when facing, as he has netted four goals in his last three appearances against the Magpies.
The 28-year-old was on the scoresheet in last season’s corresponding fixture, albeit in a 2-1 defeat, and he can repeat that trick this time around, but this time it may be in a victory for his team.
