Lecce vs Monza Predictions

Newly promoted sides face six-pointer

Lecce and Monza were promoted from Serie B together at the end of last season, and join one another, as well as fellow promoted outfit Cremonese, among the six winless teams after five games of the Serie A campaign. While Monza’s defensive record will be of genuine concern to Giovanni Stroppa, their more proactive approach may give them the edge in an early-season six-pointer.

Indeed, Monza’s tally of 13 goals conceded is the worst in Serie A, while only Cremonese have allowed more expected goals against (11.2 xGA). However, Napoli, Roma and Atalanta were responsible for nine of those concessions, and the Silvio Berlusconi-owned side have played on the front foot – only Fiorentina (64.2), Napoli (60.6) and Inter (56.4) average a higher possession share than Monza’s 55.4 per cent this term. They will likely dominate the play in southern Italy.

Lecce, on the other hand, are the only team in the league to average below 40 per cent possession (36.2) and will likely look to remain solid in this contest. Marco Baroni’s men have only conceded multiple goals once this term, showing their solidity, but have failed to score in two of their last four games and are averaging below 10 shots per match.

Double chance market offers value

Given the poor form of both sides since making the step up, backing either for a win appears to offer little value – but Monza’s more progressive style and need for a result could make them worth a punt on the double chance market, with Lecce only winning five of their last 17 matches.

Meanwhile, a 1-1 draw could represent a decent correct score prediction – two of Lecce’s last three games have finished with that scoreline.
