Montpellier vs PSG Predictions

  • Montpellier have scored in each of their last four meetings with PSG at Stade de la Mosson.
  • PSG have failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 of their last 12 away league games, conceding 18 goals across those fixtures.
  • Montpellier have scored in 13 of their 18 home Ligue 1 games this season while PSG have conceded in 15 of 18 road games.
  • Kylian Mbappe has scored nine goals in his last seven appearances for PSG.

Hosts can have moment of joy against capricious champions

Montpellier are ready to close the curtain on a forgettable season, but Olivier Dall’Oglio’s men can create one last moment of joy when a PSG side with a leaky defence and nothing to play for arrive at Stade de la Mosson on Saturday.

La Paillade have been poor this year and, after seven games without a win, face the prospect of a bottom half finish after two consecutive seasons of placing eighth in the Ligue 1 table. Champions PSG will arrive on the south coast on the back of three straight league draws, having thrown away two-goal advantages in the last couple against Strasbourg and Troyes.

Trust is not something we would readily invest in Mauricio Pochettino’s side right now even if they are up against an opponent with similarly nothing to play for. But, with anytime goalscorer fancy Kylian Mbappe in supreme form, they have far too much quality in their ranks to oppose with any confidence even if Neymar will sit this one out through suspension.

Pochettino’s side lack clean-sheet mentality

Montpellier will be missing a few key men too, including leading goal creator Teji Savanier and first-choice keeper Jonas Omlin. Even without Savanier, MHSC have scored three goals in their last two matches and should create some chances against this brittle PSG backline.

Les Parisiens have failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 of their last 12 away league games, conceding 18 goals across those fixtures, so it would be a minor shock if they blanked the hosts here. We also note that Montpellier have scored at least once in their last four head-to-head meetings with PSG at home that includes last year’s cup semi-final defeat on a penalty-shoot that probably still rankles with the fans and squad.

Hence, our favourite play for this game is to back both teams to score – and a PSG win. Montpellier have scored in 13 of their 18 home Ligue 1 games this season while PSG have conceded in 15 of 18 road games. A correct score forecast of 3-1 to the champions resonates after PSG’s last two visits to Stade de la Mosson finished that way.
