Toronto FC vs Seattle Sounders Predictions

In a repeat of last year’s MLS Cup Final, champions Toronto welcome beaten finalists Seattle Sounders to BMO Field this week. Ironically, the best two teams in last year’s competition have been united in their poor starts this time around.

With continental distractions out of the way, both Toronto and Seattle have retuned their attentions to domestic matters, though neither side has really hit their stride as of yet. Toronto did win last weekend, putting three without reply past a poor Philadelphia Union team. It was just the second victory of the season for the Canadians who have a lot of ground to make up in the Eastern Conference.

One of the biggest plus points from the win was the identity of the second goal scorer against Union. Sebastian Giovinci has been a little out of sorts so far this term, but the devastatingly skilful Italian got off the mark for the season with a fine individual effort against Philadelphia.

Greg Vanney will be hoping his players can capitalize on the momentum they manufactured against Union against a Sounders side who look to be a declining force. Their retrograde motion seemed to start in their 0-3 loss to Guadalajara in the CCL back in March and Seattle have won just once in five since.

The Sounders find themselves rooted firmly to the foot of the Western Conference, though a gap of six points to the playoff positions is hardly insurmountable. Nevertheless, the longer their poor form continues the less chance they will have of turning things around.

Seattle are the joint lowest scorers in the MLS having hit the net just five times in their seven fixtures so far. Last season’s chief goal getters Clint Dempsey and Will Bruin have scored just two goals between them so far in a campaign marked by poor finishing. With an average of 14.7, Sounders rank 8th for shots per game in the MLS but they are ranked bottom in terms of actual goals scored.

Seattle have failed to score in five of their seven league matches this season, though they have only conceded nine times in total at the other end. Thursday’s clash with Toronto promises to be another low scoring affair – 100% of the previous four meetings between them have ended with under 2.5 goal scored.

We expect that pattern to continue in their latest duel and we’re tipping the match to finish under that same goal threshold. We recommend you double that under 2.5 selection with a Toronto win. The champions are starting to turn the screw again in the MLS and their second win inside a week at BMO Field looks very likely.

Seattle’s attacking play has been desperately low in quality for weeks and with Toronto beginning to reignite their spark, backing them to win to nil looks a great bet. We’re also plumping for a 2-0 home win for our correct score prediction.
