Reason For St Etienne vs Metz Predictions

New manager Ghislain Printant has only taken charge of seven matches so far but he has already been asked to resign by the club’s hierarchy, according to reports. Printant won his first game of the season but they have been in free fall since then with four losses and two draws in the six games since. Possibly their worst result yet came at the weekend as they were thrashed 4-1 by last year’s 13th place side Angers.

The misery for Saint-Étienne gets worse the further you delve into the numbers as it’s not even as if they’ve been terribly unlucky this season, just poor in all aspects. They have created an xG of 6.32 so far, an extremely sub par number, and have conceded so many chances with an xGA of 9.99, the third worst tally in the league.

Metz sit one place behind Saint-Étienne in the table but this will be their best opportunity in quite a while to get three points. They have lost their last four matches, including an extremely hurtful 2-1 defeat to fellow relegation squabblers Amiens at the weekend. Metz did create quite a bit of bother for Amiens but failed to put enough past the Unicorns, who had conceded six times in their three previous matches.

Metz have scored just four goals this season, with of each of them being put away by Habib Diallo.  The Senegalese is drawn for the second top scorer in the league but a team will always struggle if they rely so much on one player. 56.8% of Metz’s chances have fallen to Diallo who has done well this season but he needs support from others, including his defence. Metz have conceded ten goals so far this season, the third worst tally in the league.

This match is really going to be a slog fest between two under-performing teams but with Metz relying so much on one player, we’re backing the hosts to get their second win of the season here. Saint-Étienne are still to lose at home, despite their poor form and with Metz winning just three of their last eleven away trips (three in Ligue 1, the other eight in Ligue 2), we’re expecting les Verts to get all three points. It will be close, with these teams sharing just the one clean sheet between them but ultimately we’re backing the home side to win 2-1. Saint-Étienne had a very good home record last season and we’re expecting them to show it against a very poor Metz side. We’re backing Habib Diallo to score for Metz though as he is their sole shining light at the moment with four goals in his last six games, he scored 26 last season in Ligue 2.
